Sildenafil Citrate is part of the class of drugs called PDE-5 inhibitors. Sildenafil Citrate increases penis blood flow in response to sexual stimulation. This is done by inhibiting the enzyme that is responsible for the breakdown of the cGMP. CGMP is a chemical that relaxes and expands blood vessels as well as muscles. This lets men keep an erection that is strong enough to allow sexual intimacy.
Sildenafil Citrate only works in conjunction with sexual stimulation. It is effective for 30 to 60 minutes and can be taken as long as 4 hours prior to sexual activity.
