What is alprazolam?
Alprazolam is a class of medication known as a benzodiazepine (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peen). It is believed to work by stimulating the activity of specific neurotransmitters in the brain.
Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and depression-related anxiety.
Before taking this medicine
You should avoid using alprazolam if you are:
- Additionally, you are taking an antifungal medication such as itraconazole or ketoconazole; or
- You have had an adverse reaction to any benzodiazepine in the past (alprazolam, lorazepam, diazepam, Ativan, Valium, Versed, Klonopin, and others).
To ensure that alprazolam is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:
- breathing difficulties;
- addiction to drugs or alcohol;
- depression, mental disorders, suicidal ideation or behavior; or
- illness of the kidneys or liver.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to conceive.ย If you use alprazolam during pregnancy, your kid may be born with potentially fatal withdrawal symptoms and may require many weeks of medical therapy.
You should abstain from breastfeeding.
If you choose to breastfeed, notify your doctor if you find your infant is tired or having eating difficulties.

How should I take alprazolam?
Take alprazolam precisely as your doctor has suggested. Follow the recommendations on your prescription label and thoroughly study any medication guides or instruction sheets that come with your medication. Never exceed the recommended dose or duration of alprazolam. Inform your doctor if you experience an increased desire to take more alprazolam.

Dosing information
The lowest possible effective dose should be administered, and the need for continued treatment reassessed frequently. Dosage should be reduced gradually when discontinuing therapy or decreasing the daily dosage. The dose of extended-release tablets may be increased at intervals of 3 to 4 days in increments of no more than 1 mg per day. The administration times should be distributed as evenly as possible throughout the waking hours.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medication as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if your next dose is approaching. Do not take two doses concurrently.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or contact 1-800-222-1222 for Poison Help. If combined with alcohol, opiate medication, or other medicines that produce drowsiness or decrease your breathing, an alprazolam overdose can be lethal.
Severe sleepiness, confusion, slurred speech, muscle weakness, loss of balance or coordination, feeling lightheaded, slow heartbeats, weak or shallow breathing, fainting, or coma are all possible overdose symptoms.
What should I avoid while taking alprazolam?
Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages. There is a possibility of dangerous adverse effects, including death.
Avoid driving or engaging in other potentially dangerous activities until you know how alprazolam will affect you. Insomnia or dizziness might result in falls, accidents, or severe injury.
Alprazolam side effects
Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the following symptoms of an allergic response to alprazolam: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or neck.
Alprazolam might cause breathing difficulties or cessation, mainly if you have recently used an opiate drug or alcohol. If you have slow breathing with extended pauses, bluish lips, or difficulty waking up, the person caring for you should seek immediate medical treatment.
Consult your physician immediately if you have:
- sluggish or shallow breathing
- a lightheaded sensation, as if youโre about to faint out;
- a convulsion;
- hallucinations and reckless actions;
- improved vitality, less sleepiness;
- racing thoughts, agitation, or talkativeness;
- or double vision;
- acridity (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
In older persons, drowsiness or dizziness may linger longer. Take care to avoid falling or sustaining an unintended injury.
Some of the more common alprazolam adverse effects include the following:
- somnolence; or
- feeling a little lightheaded.
After discontinuing alprazolam, seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the following symptoms: odd muscular movements, increased activity or talkativeness, abrupt and severe changes in mood or behavior, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, or suicidal thoughts or actions.
Specific withdrawal symptoms may continue up to 12 months or more after abruptly discontinuing this medication. Inform your doctor if you are experiencing persistent anxiety, depression, memory or thinking issues, difficulty sleeping, ringing in your ears, a burning or prickly sensation, or a crawling sensation beneath your skin.

What other drugs will affect alprazolam?
Occasionally, it is unsafe to use certain medications concurrently. Certain medications can affect the blood levels of other medicines you take, potentially increasing adverse effects or making the medicines less effective.
Combining alprazolam with other sleep aids or medicines that decrease breathing can result in serious side effects, including death. Consult your doctor before using any opioid prescription, sleeping pill, muscle relaxant, or anxiety or seizure medication.
Numerous substances can interact with alprazolam, and certain medications should not be administered concurrently. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking. This category includes prescription and OTC medications and vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all possible interactions are included in this list.
Warnings
MISUSE OF ALPRAZOLAM CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH and should be used only by the person for whom it was prescribed. Alprazolam can slow or stop your breathing, and fatal side effects can occur if you take this medicine with alcohol other drugs that cause drowsiness or slow your breathing.
