What exactly is Ondansetron?

Usual Adult Dose of Ondansetron for Nausea/Vomiting — Chemotherapy Induced:

Oral:

Highly Emetogenic Cancer Chemotherapy (HEC):

Recommended dose: 24 mg orally for 30 minutes before the day’s first single-day HEC (including doses of cisplatin of 50 mg/m2 or more)

Moderately Emetogenic Cancer Chemotherapy (MEC):

Recommended dose 8 mg every day, twice per day. The first dose is administered 30 minutes prior to the commencement of chemotherapy. The second dose 8 hours after followed by 8 mg taken orally twice a day (every 24 hours) for one to two days following the end of chemotherapy.

Parenteral:

The recommended dose is 0.15 mg/kg IV. This is followed by an initial dosage (infused for 15 mins) 30 minutes prior to the beginning of chemotherapy emetogenic. The doses to follow are between 4 and 8 hours following the initial amount.

-Maximum dose: 16 mg per dose

Comments:

A single dose administered over 24 hours 24 mg taken orally to treat HEC has not been investigated.

The formulation for injection is to be diluted prior to IV administration.

Uses:

-Prevention of vomiting and nausea caused by HEC or MEC

Preventing vomiting and nausea that can be caused by the initial and subsequent treatments of emetogenic chemotherapy

Usual Adult Dose of Ondansetron for Nausea/Vomiting:

Oral:

Highly Emetogenic Cancer Chemotherapy (HEC):

Parenteral:

The recommended dose is 0.15 mg/kg IV. This is followed by one dosage (infused in 15 minutes) 30 minutes before emetogenic chemotherapy and then the doses to follow within 4 to 8 hours of the initial dose.

-Maximum dose: 16 mg per dose

Comments:

A single dose administered over 24 hours 24 mg taken orally to treat HEC has not been investigated.

The injection solution must be diluted prior to the administration of IV.

-Prevention of vomiting and nausea caused by HEC or MEC

Usual Adult Dose of Ondansetron for Nausea/Vomiting — Postoperative:

Oral:

Recommended dose: 16 mg orally for 1 hour before the onset of anesthesia

Parenteral:

Recommended dose: 4 mg in IV (undiluted) immediately before starting anesthesia or after surgery (nausea or vomiting for 2 hours of surgery)

Comment:

The administration of a dose in a subsequent dose does not give additional control over nausea or vomiting.

Usual Adult Dose for Nausea/Vomiting–Radiation-Induced:

Dosage recommended: 8 mg orally, 3 times per day.

Total Body Irradiation 8 mg, orally 1 up to 2 hours prior to each radiotherapy fraction given each day

-Single High-dose Fraction radiotherapy to the abdomen 8 mg administered orally one to 2 hours prior to radiotherapy, and then doses every 8 hours following the first dose, for up to 2 days after the conclusion of radiotherapy

Fractionated Radiotherapy Daily for the Abdomen 8 mg taken orally one up to 2 hours prior to radiotherapy, with doses every 8 hours following the first dose of radiotherapy is administered every day.

Use:

Preventing nausea and vomiting that can be caused by radiotherapies, such as complete body irradiation, single high-dose fractions, or daily fractions of radiation to the abdomen

Usual Pediatric Dose for Nausea/Vomiting — Postoperative:

Parenteral:

One month up to twelve years old:

less than 40kg:

Recommended dosage: 0.1 mg/kg IV over 2 to 5 minutes following anesthesia induction or postoperatively (nausea or vomiting that may occur within a few minutes of surgery)

40 kg or more:

The recommended dose is 4 mg IV in 2 to 5 minutes following anesthesia induction or postoperatively (nausea and vomiting that may occur immediately following surgery)

-Prevention of nausea postoperatively and vomiting

Usual Pediatric Dose for Nausea/Vomiting — Chemotherapy Induced:

Oral:

Between 4 and 11 years old

The recommended dose is 4 mg, taken orally three times a day. With the first dose being administered 30 minutes prior to the commencement of chemotherapy. Then, follow-up doses every 4 or 8 hours following the initial dose. Then, 3 mg orally, three times every day (every eight hours) for the first to two days following the end of chemotherapy.

12-year-olds and over:

Recommended dose 8 mg, twice daily, with the first dose being administered 30 minutes prior to the commencement of chemotherapy. The second dose 8 hours after followed by 8 mg taken orally twice a day (every 24 hours) for up to 2 days following the conclusion of chemotherapy.

Parenteral:

From 6 months until 18 years old:

The recommended dose is 0.15 mg/kg IV. Take initial dosage (infused in 15 minutes) 30 minutes prior to the beginning of chemotherapy with emetogenic agents and the subsequent doses administered between 4 and 8 hours following the first dose.

-Maximum dose: 16 mg (per dose)

Comments:
