Clofi 100 (Clomifene) 100 mg

Product Information

Clofi 100 is prescribed to treat infertility in women caused by ovulation problems. This drug is most likely effective in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), amenorrhea-galactorrhoea syndrome, psychogenic amenorrhoea, post-oral-contraceptive amenorrhoea and other secondary cases of amenorrhoea. This drug is also used in treating male infertility by increasing spermatogenesis and is found effective in treating secondary male hypogonadism.

Clofi 100 contains 100mg of the active ingredient Clomiphene citrate. This drug is an anti-oestrogen which works by blocking the oestrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. Oestrogen sends negative feedback to the pituitary gland preventing it from releasing hormones that control the production and release of an egg. With blocked oestrogen receptors, the signals to the pituitary gland is stopped thereby increasing the hormones to stimulate the ovaries in making and releasing an egg for ovulation. This drug does not immediately produce an ovulation but starts a chain reaction that leads to an ovulation.

In addition to this drug in treating infertility, properly timed sexual intercourse is also necessary.

Contraindications

Clofi is contraindicated to patients with known allergy to its active ingredient Clomiphene citrate, and all its inactive ingredients.

This drug must not be used by patients with the following medical conditions:

• History or current Liver problems
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding
• Hormone-dependent tumors
• Ovarian cyst unrelated to polycystic ovary syndrome
• Pregnant
• Problem with thyroid or adrenal gland

Warnings and Precautions

Some medications are not safe to take for certain conditions, and sometimes dose adjustments are necessary to make it safe. Physicians must be notified of the following conditions before taking Clofi:

• If already pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have liver problems
• Have ovarian cysts not related to PCOS
• Have endometriosis or uterine fibroids
• Have hormone-dependent tumor
• Have heavy or unusual menstrual periods

Clomiphene is under Pregnancy Category X, although human studies is not enough, animal studies have shown evidence of fetal harm. This drug is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Clomiphene may increase the risk of having multiple pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy.

This drug is not recommended for use during breastfeeding despite not knowing if it passes into breast milk. This drug however, may reduce breast milk production.

Caution is advised when driving, using machineries or performing hazardous activities as this drug causes visual side effects.

Clomiphene are known to interact with the following drugs:

• Concomitant use of Clomiphene and Bexarotene, an anticancer drug, may increase the risk of pancreatitis.
• Concomitant use with Ospemifene, a drug used as a pain reliever during intercourse, may increase the risk of thrombus.

Clofi and Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking Clomiphene (Clofi) may increase risk or worsen side effects such as visual problems and dizziness.
